In a 2017 study conducted in the UK by Dove, it was found that 61% of girls aged 10-17 reported experiencing low self-esteem. This statistic highlights a significant concern, as self-esteem can profoundly impact various areas of an individual’s life.

What is Self-Esteem?

Self-esteem is essentially the opinion we hold about ourselves. It encompasses an individual’s subjective evaluation of their worth and is synonymous with terms such as self-worth, self-regard, self-respect, and self-integrity. Healthy self-esteem allows us to feel positive about ourselves and navigate life’s ups and downs with resilience.

Conversely, when self-esteem is low, we tend to view ourselves and our lives negatively, feeling less capable of tackling life’s challenges. I have witnessed this phenomenon most often in today’s teenagers. Factors such as the pervasive influence of social media and varying parenting styles have contributed to shifts in self-worth among young people, profoundly impacting their lives.

  • Sensitivity to criticism
  • Social withdrawal
  • Hostility
  • Excessive preoccupation with personal problems
  • Physical symptoms like fatigue, insomnia, and headaches
